Rockworld Intranet Project

I lead UX research to evaluate two intranet sites to prepare for redesigns. Through this opportunity, I conducted over 30 user interviews, worked on testing plans, scripts and strategy, helped bring wireframes into two working prototypes, conducted six user tests, created a card sorting exercise to improve upon information architecture, and presented my findings in five professional presentations to stakeholders. My role was to conduct user research to understand how users feel about the sites, what pain points exists currently, and which features users value most.

Problem

Overlap of resources on two intranet sites leading users to be lost, confused, or overloaded with information.

The company was looking to evaluate each site for a possible combination into one site for an upcoming platform change.

Phase One: UX Interviews

I conducted two sets of ten user interviews with employees from five different business areas. Each set focused on the one of the intranet sites being evaluated. Each interview was 30 minutes. After preparing interview questions, I conducted and recorded sessions via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. After the interviews were complete, I reviewed my notes, watched the recordings, and read transcripts where I created a user research workbook in Excel organized by interview question and participant so I could compare every user’s answer to the specific questions. This allowed me to narrow down to some main findings, which was then transferred to a Miro board as an affinity map.

From here I created a presentation for stakeholders covering the general findings of my research along with my recommendation to dive a little deeper in some areas where more details were needed.

A third round of ten interviews was conducted, giving direction for multiple wireframe solutions.

Phase Two: Prototyping and User Testing

During this stage, I worked on testing plans, scripts and strategy. I worked with our designer to help bring wireframes into two working prototypes. From there, I conducted six user tests while alternating the prototypes.

I presented our findings to stakeholders once again, and during this meeting we discovered a need for simplifying the information architecture in the navigation.

Phase Three: Card Sort Exercise

During this stage, I used Optimal Workshop to conduct a card sort exercise to a targeted group from multiple business areas. I analyzed the data from over 60 responses and presented my findings as part of my last contribution to this project.

Outcome

This research helped clearly define goals for the project and brought out some surprising findings that differed from initial assumptions. Overall, I was able to provide a clear voice for the user to be carried into the next stage in the process.
